5 Types of Non-Verbal Communication

In the intercultural field, COMMUNICATION is key.

And when working with other cultures, one must adapt & adjust their style accordingly.

But this doesn't mean just altering your verbal communications. It means adjusting non-verbals as well.

Paying attention to body language, gestures, and use of space is just as important as the words we speak.

Here are 5 types of non-verbal communication that you should be paying attention to in cross-cultural encounters.

1 - Kinesics

The study of the way in which certain body movements and gestures serve as a form of nonverbal communication, such as posture, eye contact, & facial expressions.

2 - Haptics

The study of communication by touch, such as handshakes and patting someone on the back.

3 - Vocalics

The study of paralanguage; the vocal qualities that go along with verbal messages, such as pitch, volume, and tone.

4 - Proxemics

The study of how space and distance influence communication; includes personal, social, and intimate space.

5 - Chronemics

The study of how time affects communication; how people experience time, promptness, and even how much time people spend talking.

When working across cultures, it's important to understand how non-verbal communication can impact your relationships & encounters.
