Company culture is so important and should not be ignored.

But hiring managers need to be aware of the difference in hiring for Culture FIT vs. Culture ADD.

Culture Fit is the likelihood that someone will reflect and be able to adapt to the core beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that make up your organization.

Culture Add is the likelihood that someone will bring a set of diverse opinions, experiences, and skills which enhances the overall company culture.

The problem with just hiring for Culture Fit is that it can facilitate bias and lead to a homogeneous culture.

When you hire for Culture Add, you are valuing other opinions & 'ways of doing' and are thus increasing diversity and innovation, which then impacts the bottom line.

If interviewing for a job, ask about a company's hiring practices. Ask about diversity and inclusion...and not just in terms of race and gender, but also in terms of diversity of thought. Do they tend to hire people from the same institutions? Do they require university degrees? Show companies the unique experiences you bring to the table and how you can use those to benefit the organization.

How can you make sure you are hiring more diverse employees?

There are many ways to do this, but a great place to start is to perform a Culture ScanDevelop and implement a plan to observe your organizational culture. Start small. Start with your hiring practices. Interview and survey employees to get their opinions and thoughts.

We all know the importance of diversity in the workplace. Here are some stats you can share with your organization if they're still in need of a little push 😊:

  • Diverse companies enjoy 2.3 times higher cash flow per employee (Deloitte)

  • Diverse management boots revenue by 19% (Boston Consulting Group)

  • Racially and ethnically diverse companies are 35% more likely to perform better (McKinsey)

  • Gender-diverse companies are 15% more likely to have higher performance (McKinsey)

  • Diverse teams are 87% better at making decisions (People Management)

In today's world, Diversity and Culture Add are no longer a luxury - they are a necessity...for both employees and employers.
