Expatria - The Country You've Never Heard Of
A few years ago, The Expat Survey posted an article on Expatria - the biggest country you've never heard of. The article puts into perspective the enormous number of people living outside of their home country and, more importantly, plants the seeds for nations and companies to do more to understand expatriate groups.
Today, there are 258 million people living outside of their home country. They are immigrants, business expats, retirees, refugees, etc.
Imagine, for a minute, that these 258 million people were one nation - a nation of expats.
▶︎ This nation, Expatria, would be the 5th largest nation in the world.
▶︎ It would be slightly larger than the population of Brazil.
▶︎ It would be equal to 79% of the population of the United States.
▶︎ It would be beat in population size only by China, India, the USA, and Indonesia.
▶︎ It would be 3.4% of the world's population.
▶︎ It would be one of the most diverse nations on the planet, with expats coming from all over the world.
Thinking of Expatria as a nation unto itself is an interesting thought. It reminds us that the world is getting smaller, and that cultures are exchanging ideas, practices, behaviors more and more.
In terms of business expats, more research needs to be done in order to capture accurate data so that we can work to better understand these groups, their needs, and how we can best serve them.
